Launch into Life (L2L) FAQ

The first Wycliffe Australia Gap Year (L2L = Launch into Life) Program will be held from January to November 2027. The following FAQs (and answers) are all subject to change.

03. How many modules make up the Wycliffe L2L and how long is each module?

The L2L program includes ten modules provided by four Service Providers:

The L2L program includes ten modules provided by four Service Providers: Wycliffe Australia, ITA (Intercultural Training Australia – in collaboration with the Australian College of Community Development, RTO: 31980); (Vocational Bible College Limited, RTO: 41496), and AuSIL (Australian Society for Indigenous Languages) based in Darwin.

Four of the ten modules are one week in length; two are three weeks in length; one is six weeks in length; and one is 20 weeks in length. In between these modules are three one-week breaks, one two-week break, and one three-week break.

04. What are the age limits for L2L participants?

The stated ages are 18 years and above. A person who is 17 years of age may apply to participate in L2L, so long as they become 18 years of age by 25 January 2027.

Overseas L2L Participants: L2L participants applying from outside Australia must be 18 years of age by 1 January 2027.

05. What is the L2L Application process?

A – EOI: Complete an Expression of Interest online, or apply for an Expression of Interest by emailing Elspeth Campbell. elspeth_campbell@wycliffe.org.au.

B – L2L Application: After receiving and processing your Expression of Interest, the L2L staff will send you an Application Form. That form includes an application to become a Wycliffe Affiliate.

C – Wycliffe Affiliate: To ensure Wycliffe complies with all government regulations, L2L students must be approved as Wycliffe Affiliates. This process will include checks such as child safety and police checks.

06. When will I know whether I have been accepted into the L2L team?

After you have submitted your L2L Application form, Wycliffe will process your application as quickly as possible, so that within a month or so, you have been informed that your application is successful, subject to the completion of your approval as a Wycliffe Affiliate.

At that point in time you will be welcomed to the L2L 2027 team, given instructions on how to complete your application by paying your deposit, and how to prepare to join the L2L team in January 2027.

07. What are the costs for L2L 2027?

Total costs payable to Wycliffe: A$11,500. This includes a range of fees paid to the Service Providers (ITA, WA, VBC, AuSIL) for the courses they teach. The $11,500 fees also include all costs incurred in Israel (accommodation/ food/ travel/ entry fees/ tourist guide, etc.); or to another country if Israel is not practical at that time.

08. What L2L expenses are NOT covered by the $11,500 L2L fees?

A wide range of L2L expenses are NOT covered by the $11,500 L2L fees:

A – travel: All private travel within Australia.

B – food: All food eaten throughout the year except when provided by Wycliffe or in Israel.

C – texts: Any text books required for courses throughout the year.

D – international travel: airfares to and from Israel or an alternative country

E – miscellaneous: Some other incidental costs in Australia.

10. What kind of accommodation is provided?

Many courses are conducted every year at the Wycliffe Australia National Centre at Kangaroo Ground on the north-eastern outskirts of Melbourne. L2L students will be housed in twin-share student accommodation. Each accommodation block includes a kitchen and lounge room. The normal cost of this accommodation for students is approximately $6,000, but this is provided at no additional cost to L2L students.

11. Employment: Wycliffe is charging $11,500 for a person to join the L2L Program, and that does not cover all costs. What if I cannot afford that expense? Is there opportunity to work 2-3 days a week to supplement my finances?

No, it is not possible to commit to any employment on a regular basis. Some L2L modules are five days per week, but some ministry opportunities require you to serve on Saturdays and even on Sundays.

Youth Allowance: However, since L2L includes a Certificate IV in TESOL, and a Certificate IV in Christian Ministry and Theology, eligible Australian students may apply for Youth Allowance.

13. What study areas are included within the L2L Program?

Wycliffe – Orientation: an orientation to Bible translation around the world; Partnership Development; and Preparing to Live Cross-culturally;

ITA – TESOL: Learning how to prepare lessons and to teach English to those of a different culture. This course fulfils the Government requirements for 11025NAT Certificate IV in Teaching English as an Additional Language – TESOL (offered in collaboration with the Australian College of Community Development, RTO: 31980);

VBC – Bible: 11237NAT Certificate IV in Christian Ministry & Theology (Vocational Bible College Limited, RTO: 41496).

Wycliffe – Story the Bible: Learning how to craft and tell SAM (simple + accurate + memorable) Bible stories, and learning how to teach others.

Wycliffe – Gospel Drama: Learning how to share the gospel through drama, and to teach Gospel Drama to others.

Wycliffe – Israel Study Tour: Through the Wycliffe K2K Israel Study Tour, L2L students learn the geography, topography, and culture of Israel 2,000 years ago. They also learn Bible stories relevant to a variety of locations throughout Israel, and then in October/November 2027 they visit these places under the direction of an experienced Israeli Tour Guide. If travel to Israel is not practical at that time, a similar trip to an alternative country will be included.

14. What ministry opportunities are included in the Wycliffe L2L Program?

There are six main ministry opportunities:

A – TESOL: People who have recently come to Australia (and some who have been here several years) often need help with their English. The TESOL course will train L2L students in how to teach English to newcomers. The practical assignments include preparing lesson plans and teaching lessons. This is a cross-cultural ministry opportunity.

B – Cross-Culture: L2L students will also interact with their ESL students and learn something of their culture. This activity is also a ministry opportunity. Some ESL students may also wish to learn from the Bible.

C – Cross-Cultural Reading: Some Aboriginal Christians struggle to read. L2L students will provide a ‘helping hand’ one-on-one, face-to-face, in remote communities.

D – STB: The L2L students will take Story the Bible training, and then teach others how to craft and tell simple, accurate and memorable Bible stories. They will also help their students learn how to teach Bible stories and how to lead Bible studies based on these stories.

E – Drama: L2L students will learn, rehearse and perform The Jonah Drama, then teach it to others. God’s Word speaks volumes through drama.

F – Evangelism: Throughout the L2L year students will be learning and telling Bible stories. In Israel they will tell Bible stories at every historical site they visit. Being able to tell Bible stories on every occasion will enable them to share Bible stories with people who are not yet believers.

15. I have never taught anything publicly. How will the L2L Gap Year help me?

The TESOL training is an excellent ‘teacher training’ course. Included within the course is a lot of practice in teaching and the use of a great variety of teaching aids.

The Story the Bible training includes the innovative use of interactive teaching methodologies. L2L participants will be trained to teach by facilitation, and will train others in the Story the Bible skills.

By the end of the year each L2L participant will have grown significantly in their confidence and competence in teaching.

16. I have never done any acting. In fact, I am not skilled in that area. I do not feel comfortable in participating in drama.

Many people who participate in Gospel Drama have never taken drama classes, or even acted in a drama before. The Wycliffe Gospel Dramas are unlike other kinds of drama, acted out on a stage. The Gospel Dramas (based on Matthew, Luke, John, Jonah and Daniel) are acted as theatre-in-the-round, with some actors playing many roles, and sometimes interacting with members of the audience as they move from place to place in the drama.

17. I have been to church all my life. Why is the Certificate IV in Christian Ministry and Theology included in the Wycliffe L2L Gap Year Program?

The Certificate IV in Christian Ministry and Theology will take students to parts of the Bible they may never have touched in church. Each of the nine Certificate IV subjects explores a different aspect of the Bible – both Old and New Testament. It will build a solid foundation for understanding the call of Jesus to “Go into all the world and make disciples of people from every ethnic group.” It will also help L2L students to better understand what Jesus meant when He said, ‘teaching them to obey all I have commanded you’.

20. Why do Wycliffe L2L students need to become Wycliffe Affiliates?

Wycliffe Australia has a responsibility both to L2L students, and to members of the public whom L2L students may engage with in a ministry capacity. To ensure that we are fulfilling all our regulatory and ethical responsibilities, we require that L2L students are accepted as Wycliffe Affiliates before commencing the L2L program. This process requires paperwork, including a WWCC (Working With Children Check), police check etc. L2L students serve in many capacities during their L2L Journey, therefore, becoming a Wycliffe Affiliate is mandatory.

21. Why is the TESOL training included in the L2L? How does it fit with Bible translation? How will it benefit me?

There are many benefits from the excellent training provided by the ITA (Intercultural Training Australia.)

A – Teaching skills: Many Christians go through their whole lives without developing teaching skills, despite the emphasis Jesus placed on the importance of his followers becoming excellent gospel communicators. In fact, too many Christians excuse themselves from this mandate. The TESOL course is strong in helping students to develop teaching skills.

B – Cross-cultural ministry: Teaching English to migrants not only meets a need that they have, but also provides an opportunity to share God’s love.

C – Accreditation: The 11025NAT Certificate IV in Teaching English as an Additional Language (TESOL) is an internationally recognised qualification for ESL. In other words, L2L graduates have a marketable qualification.

D – Door-opening: All over the world, there is a need for English teachers. This skill (and Australian Government accreditation) can often open doors to countries or regions or ethnic groups where Christianity is not normally welcomed. For this reason, Wycliffe (and many other mission organisations) strongly support the TESOL training and ministry.

22. How does the Story the Bible training integrate with other aspects of the L2L program?

In fact, the STB training integrates with almost every module within the L2L program.

A – TESOL: In the TESOL training students learn teaching skills and gain confidence in speaking in public. Both are important in Story the Bible training;

B – Bible: When crafting a Bible story, students often study the Scriptures at a deeper level than they are accustomed to doing. This gives them a greater insight into the meaning of Scripture;

C – Gospel Drama: Bible storytelling is at the heart of Gospel Drama. Most Bible stories crafted in an STB workshop are 2-3 minutes long. A Gospel Drama is a non-stop Bible story with many speakers that continues uninterrupted for up to 90 minutes; and

D – Israel Study Tour: During the K2K Israel Study Tour L2L participants will visit over 80 historical locations in Israel. At each site L2L participants will tell the Bible stories relevant to the history of that site. This preparation will happen throughout the year.
