Scripture Engagement

Would you like to encourage Indigenous Christians around Alice Springs, by helping them access the Bible in languages they understand? Our partner organisation, the Australian Society for Indigenous Languages (AuSIL), is looking for a mature Christian who can help distribute translated Scriptures and other language resources in Alice Springs and nearby communities.

This role focuses on building relationships with local Christians, churches, hostels, and community organisations, to help people find out about and obtain resources that are available in their own languages.

Relationships take time, so someone open to serving long term is required, and they would need to be based in Alice Springs for at least 8 months a year. This role is unsalaried, so we are looking for a committed volunteer or someone willing to partner with a team of prayer and financial supporters. It’s a great opportunity to enable others to take part in this great work.

Responsibilities

• Build relationships with local Christians, churches, hostels, and community organisations
• Set up book stalls to distribute Bibles and other Christian resources available in Indigenous languages.

Qualifications

• Mature Christian who is confident discussing the Bible
• Good interpersonal, cross-cultural and relationship-building skills
• Some biblical training would be beneficial
• Willingness to learn about Indigenous languages and cultures.

Orientation and Training

• 4 week Summer Intensive with SILA (looking at linguistics, language learning and working cross-culturally)
• Wycliffe orientation courses
• Cultural orientation.
