Translation Specialist




Papuan Malay is spoken all around the coast of Papua, Indonesia, by about 2 million people. A Bible translation project is underway, with a number of books and resources already published. We often receive feedback that the available scriptures in Papuan Malay are quickly and easily understood. The team hopes to complete the New Testament in the next five years, but to do this we need more people to work alongside the team’s mother-tongue translators. Are you ready to live in a city location surrounded by a beautiful lake and mountains? Do you have training in linguistics and Biblical studies and have a heart to work cross-culturally? Then this could be the role for you!


  • mentor and advise local translators
  • train translators in translation principles and practices
  • help to plan and monitor a translation project
  • conduct exegetical checks of translated texts
  • general assistance where needed

  • humility and willingness to work in a team that prioritises consensus-based decision making and ownership by national team members

Training Requirements:

  • a theological degree
  • language and culture training
  • one year at SIL Australia
  • orientation and other training
  • orientation workshops, held at our National Centre in Kangaroo Ground, Victoria
