Project 8501

Inhabiting the Himalayan foothills of South Asia, the Godavari* people live in dozens of villages across six districts. They already have a mini Bible consisting of Genesis, the Gospels, and Acts in their language, but few will be able to read this life-changing message of Jesus unless their ability to read in their own language improves.

Although the Godavari language is written with the same letters as the national language, it looks quite different due to the way the letters are used in Godavari. As a result, many Godavari people are literate in the national language, but not in Godavari.

This project aims to respond to the literacy needs of the Godavari people in several ways. First, national linguists will work with the wider Godavari community to determine a spelling and writing system for the language. Having this system in place will ensure that future portions of printed Scripture are clear and easily understood by the people.

The second phase of the project will involve two days of training to help those who are already literate in the national language to transfer their literacy skills to Godavari. Several teachers will be trained to reproduce the literacy training program in the villages. This widespread approach to literacy facilitation will significantly address the Godavari challenge and empower them to read God’s Word in the language that speaks to them best.
